There was just a single Vale Of Belvoir Angel stones recorded in the church grounds at Walton Le Wolds. This is another of the variant designs; much removed in style from the majority that we have seen.

The stone here is quite badly damaged at the top, with some damage to the angel itself. The angel here is smiling, has chubby cheeks and wonderful flowing wings; one of which has sadly been damaged over the years.

​

Angels symbolically on gravestones have an important task; to gather up and offer safe escort of the souls of the saved to Heaven. An important but joyful task! This is doubtless why some are depicted as smiling.

This stone reads 'Here lieth the body of Mr John Shittlewood who departed this life the 31st day of May in the 31st year of his age Anno Dom 1718'
